Backyard clay test firings at other cones

April 28, 2015 Ceramics, Personal, Study

Susan at Wildflower Arts Center did some test firings for me to see the
vitrification point of my backyard clay. I really like Cone03, it’s a beautiful red, exactly what I need for the body of daruma. The kaolin didn’t melt, it’s unchanged. Cone6 went too far — while it didn’t melt completely, it did start to bubble up in size and change its shape. I wonder if the sheen that it has can came from the melted layer of kaolin slip?

Next up I need to find a consistent way to paint the kaolin onto a piece so that it does not flake off when dry, and I need to take courses on how to use a potters wheel to gain access to the wheels at the art center so I can throw down. IRL Questing~
